Heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG) is an operation for blocked or narrowed heart arteries. The surgeon takes a blood vessel from another part of your body, such as your leg, arm or chest. This blood vessel, called a graft, lets blood flow around the blocked part of the artery. Heart doctors may suggest bypass surgery, a procedure through a blood vessel (angioplasty), or medicines. Before the hospital sends a quote, heart doctors (cardiologists) and surgeons review your angiography, echo (heart scan) and ECG reports. They also look at your other illnesses and your medicines. The surgeon can explain the likely benefits and risks for you. The treating doctor decides whether bypass surgery is right for you.

Questions Families Ask About This Treatment
How Long Will I Stay in Hospital, and in India?
Plan for about 5 to 7 days in hospital. You may spend time in intensive care (ICU) first, and the heart team decides how long. Plan to stay in India for about 3 to 4 weeks in total, for tests, surgery and check-ups. Your heart team may advise a different plan for you.
What Is the Difference Between Angioplasty and Bypass Surgery?
Angioplasty opens a narrowed artery from the inside, using a thin tube put into a blood vessel. A small mesh tube, called a stent, is usually left in the artery. Bypass surgery is an operation that makes a new route for blood around the blocked part. Your heart team decides which suits you, after reviewing your angiography.
Which Reports Should I Get Ready?
Get your angiography report and images, your echo (heart scan) and ECG reports, and a list of your medicines. Add reports about other illnesses, such as diabetes. The hospital will tell you if it needs more. We will send you a secure link, so please do not send reports on WhatsApp.
What If the Doctor Suggests a Different Treatment When I Arrive?
Your quote is based on the reports you sent. After tests in India, the heart team may suggest a different plan, such as angioplasty instead of surgery. Ask the hospital for a new written quote before you agree to the change.
Why Might My Final Bill Be Different from the Quote?
A quote is based on your reports. The final bill can change after the heart team examines you in India. The main reasons are extra days in intensive care, extra nights in hospital, extra tests or a complication. Ask the hospital to explain any change in writing before it charges you.
When Can I Fly Home After Bypass Surgery?
When your heart team says you are fit to fly. UK Civil Aviation Authority guidance for doctors gives about 10 to 14 days after bypass surgery. Ask how to lower the risk of blood clots on the flight. Carry your discharge summary and medicines in your hand luggage.
Can a Family Member Come with Me and Stay with Me?
Ask the hospital whether a family member can stay in your room, and whether their meals cost extra. Under Government of India e-Visa rules, up to 2 family members can get e-Medical Attendant visas with your e-Medical visa. Source: indianvisaonline.gov.in, checked on 15 September 2026.
What Should I Ask the Hospital About My Quote?
Ask these questions. How many days in intensive care and nights in hospital are included? What type of room is it? Are the surgeon and anaesthetist fees included? Are the tests before surgery included? What happens to the cost if there is a complication? How long is the quote valid?
