Hip replacement (total hip arthroplasty) replaces a worn or damaged hip joint with an artificial joint, called an implant. It is usually for people with severe hip pain or stiffness, often from arthritis. Usually, other treatments have not helped enough. It is also used for some kinds of hip bone damage. Before the hospital sends a quote, the surgeon reviews your hip X-rays, any MRI or CT report, your other illnesses and medicines. There are different implant types and brands, and they change the price, so each quote should name the implant. The surgeon can explain the likely benefits and risks for you. The treating doctor decides whether hip replacement is right for you.
